The 2013-2014 NBA Season Predictions

NBA Predictions
2013-2014
10-27-13 and 11-05-13

The NBA Season is just days from kicking off. DAYS! Are you excited? I am! There is no professional sport I follow closer and I just can't wait to start watching games again.
Because the season is about to begin, I've decided to do my First Annual NBA Season Predictions. Will I be doing this season after season? I don't know, but I hope to!
Here we go! *(The Season is NOW underway)*

The 2013-2014 NBA Standings
The first thing I want to predict is the seeds, from the worst all the way up:

THE WORST OF THE WORST -
15. EAST - Philadelphia 76er's
Due to how the offseason went, it appears that the Philadelphia 76er's will be have the worst record in the East. With their first round draft pick, Noel, probably out for the season, and Evan Turner probably getting the most touches, Sixer basketball is going to be tough to watch. Many are predicting that they might contend for the worst record in league history. I don't think they'll be that bad, but I'd be surprised to see them go on any “winning streak” this season. They are going to be looking to the 2014 Draft, hoping to win the top lottery pick, which most are predicting will be Andrew Wiggins, the up and coming Kansas player.
Predicted Record: 14-681

15. WEST – Phoenix Suns
The West's worst is expected to do a little better than the Sixer's, but no one is expecting much from Phoenix. Plus they just traded their best player, they will also be looking to join the “Riggin's for Wiggins.”
Predicted Record: 19-63
2nd Category:
WE SHOULD HAVE LOST A FEW MORE -
14. EAST – Boston Celtics
It is hard to think that the Celtics might be a bottom feeder out East, but if you've payed attention at all this offseason, you know the Celtics that we've come to know, no longer exist. With Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett all in new places, along with Ray leaving the season before,2 the teams best player, Rondo, is injured, and they don't have much going for them. Unless you like Kris Humphries, and then you are in luck! Kris Humphries! What a pickup!
Predicted Record: 20-62

14. WEST – Los Angles Lakers
Honestly, as long as Kobe remains in L.A., I hate picking against them, but after seeing how bad they were with Dwight, Pau and Kobe, I can't see them being good this season. Dwight is with Houston, and Kobe is coming off a pretty rough injury. Also, they signed Nick Young, who truly is just a shot friendly guard. If Kobe comes back healthy, they could scrape off a decent record, but I just don't see it. Expect them to be the second best team in L.A.3
Predicted Record: 25-57

13. EAST– Orlando Magic
It seems like years since Howard and the Magic were a top team in the East. It hasn't been that long actually, just 2010-2011, but I'm sure the fans there are still bitter. They will probably have more fun rooting against Houston then rooting for the Magic.
Predicted Record: 22-60

13. WEST – Utah Jazz
No Paul Milsapp, no Al Jefferson, no way that the Jazz finish with a good record. I could be wrong here, but I don't think Utah will be worth watching this year.
Predicted Record: 26-56

12. EAST – Charlotte Bobcats
The theme in the East the past few years has been mediocrity, minus a few teams, and I see this trend continuing, at least toward the bottom of the conference. The Bobcats added Al Jefferson this offseason, and will look better than last season, but expect much of the same. Kemba Walker showed flashes of brilliance, and Michael Kidd-Gilcrest should be better, but lack of defense should keep them towards the bottom. It also doesn't help that Michael Jordan is the owner.
Predicted Record: 28-54

12. WEST – Portland Trailblazers
Portland has some real talent in Damian Lillard and Lamarcus Aldridge, but I don't think they'll be doing much this season. If this team found themselves in the East, they would potentially make the playoffs, but the West is deep, and because of that, they will be on the outside looking in.
Predicted Record: 32-50

TEAMS ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

11. EAST – Toronto Raptors
I feel bad for Canadian's. They have one NBA team, and they always seem to be in the same position, year in and year out. Never the worst in league, but not good enough for the playoffs either. This years team features some decent talent, with good bench depth, but the problem is their starting unit is filled with good role players as well. With no real stars, this team will continue to be a middle of the pack team.
Predicted Record: 33-49

11. WEST – Sacramento Kings4
The Sacramento Kings are finally, for the first time since C-Webb, moving in the right direction. With new ownership, a new coach in Mike Malone, a new Stadium coming next season, and a decent group of young players, they will only look to improve over the next few seasons. With that though, they have not made the step to the playoffs just yet. I expect Demarcus Cousins to improve this season, and the team to be better offensively, but they will be in the same spot as usual when the season comes to a close. Maybe they'll make the playoffs in 2015!
Predicted Record: 34-48

10. EAST – Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks are the typical sports team that is always decent but never really contends for a Championship. They make the playoffs but even their fans no nothing is going to come from it. This year though, I predict there will be some change! I am predicting the Hawks don't make the playoffs. Will this actually happen? It will depend on if Cleveland and Washington can play the way they should, but if they do, Atlanta should be on the outside looking in.5
Predicted Record: 35-47

10. WEST – Denver Nuggets
Everyone is predicting it, but if it happens, it will be unprecedented. The Denver Nuggets won 50 plus games last season, but most sports experts are expecting them to miss the playoffs. I agree, and the reasons being they lost George Karl, their coach, along with Andre Igudola and Galinarri is injured. Add all that together and it is a totally different team then the one they sported last season.
Predicted Record: 36-46

9. EAST - Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks finished with the eighth seed last season, and got swept 4-0. This season I think their fans wont have to suffer as much, because this time, they'll be on the outside looking in.
Predicted Record: 37-45

9. WEST – New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans made a few moves this offseason that I really liked, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them make the playoffs, but honestly, a lot of question marks, especially with health and team chemistry. Biggest question marks are Tyreke Evans and Anthony Davis.
Predicted Record: 44-38

PLAYOFFS BABY!!!

8. EAST – Cleveland Cavaliers
Mike Brown in back, Kyrie Irvin andAnderson Veraijau are healthy, Andrew Bynum will be suiting up at some point, the first pick in the 2013 draft, Anthony Bennett, will be making his debut, and the rest of the team is competent. Honestly, Cleveland has not looked this good since.... LeBron was wearing 23!6
Predicted Record: 43-39

8. WEST – Dallas Mavericks
Dirk Nowitski legacy has already been solidified because of his 2011 Finals performance, but since then, Dallas and Dirk haven't been all that good, especially last season. Dirk is healthy now though, and because of that, along with a few additions, they should make the playoffs.
Predicted Record: 46-36

7. EAST – New York Knicks
Last season, the Knicks exceeded expectations and finished with the second best record in the East. Most people are expecting regression, and I agree. The East is better this season and the Knicks are going to have a tough time playing defense. I wouldn't be surprised if the Knicks tried making some midseason trades.
Predicted Record: 45-37

7. WEST – Minnesota Timberwolves
For the third straight season, Minnesota is expected to make the playoffs, but only if they can stay healthy. With Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Petrovic, along with Kevin Martin, the T-Wolves boast a strong team, and could make for some exciting basketball. The key for them is staying healthy.
Predicted Record: 47-35

6. EAST – Detroit Pistons
With a new coach in Maurice Cheeks and some new talent, the Pistons finally seem ready to make it back to the playoffs. They spent some good money this offseason on both Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith, and if Andre Drummonds and Greg Monroe continue to improve, this team could be a tough opponent for anyone. If things are not going well though, expect a midseason trade, with Greg Monroe likely the guy to get moved.
Predicted Record: 46-36

6. WEST – Memphis Grizzlies
Memphis decided to switch coaches this season and added sharpshooter Mike Miller, but these two moves don't look like they will push Memphis higher in the standings. Regardless of the offense though, their defense will still be very good.
Predicted Record: 48-34

5. EAST – Washington Wizards
With the addition of Gortat, the Wizards have a chance to be good, especially if John Wall can continue to do what he did at the end of season. It has been a while since the Wizards were a good team, but this season they should make some strides.
Predicted Record: 48-34

TITLE CONTENDERS

5. WEST – Los Angeles Clippers
The fifth seed might seem a bit low for the Clippers, but this seed isn't so much a knock on the Clippers, but instead a compliment to the teams ahead of them. There is a chance the Clippers could finish as high as the first seed, but I think this is a better spot for them. Chris Paul is a magician, and the additions of J.J. Redick and Doc Rivers will definitely help, but I think that Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan have hit their ceilings, and for that, they only get the fifth seed from me.
Predicted Record: 53-29

4. EAST – Indiana Pacers
The 2013 Playoffs seemed to have been the coming out party for the Pacers and Paul George. Brilliant team work almost got them to the Finals. Besides that, flashes of brilliance from Roy Hibbert, David West and George should excite fans in Indiana, along with having Danny Granger back.Even still, I expect regression from this team. The stingiest of Defenses, the Pacers still lack a good offensive flow and health questions still remain with Granger. The Pacers might be one of the best bets to beat Miami, but I still only expect an average regular season.
Predicted Record: 51-31

4. WEST – Houston Rockets
The Rockets made the biggest offseason addition, adding Dwight Howard. From the sounds of things, Dwight is looking more like his DPOY self, and less like the Los Angeles Lakers version. If this is true, and Dwight once again regains his form, the Rockets might finish with the best record out West, and might be the title favorites. With that, I'm not sold, and I think they will win a lot of games, but still struggle at times.
Predicted Record: 54-28

3. EAST – Brooklyn Nets
Brooklyn might be sporting the most decorated starting five in the NBA, with All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, and Joe Smith, along with Brooke Lopez, but with that, questions still remain about how good they will really be. If they can all mesh together, stay healthy and avoid Fr. Time, they will be contending for a title come May.
Predicted Record:
53-29

3. WEST – Golden State Warriors
Ahead of both the Rockets and the Clippers? Really? Simply put, yes. Marc Jackson has done a wonderful job in Golden State, by utilizing young talent and bringing in some good talent, with the most recent talent being Andre Igudola. The poor man's version of LeBron, Iggy gives the Warriors a defensive stopper, and if Steph Curry can healthy, they also will have a legitimate MVP canidate. I like the upside with this team.
Predicted Record: 55-27

2. EAST – Chicago Bulls
This is what we call the Derrick Rose effect. The Bulls struggled last year offensively, and found themselves relying way to much on sub par talent, but with Rose back, there is a buzz around this team. Everyone wants to see if the 2010 MVP7 can perform at this previous level, and maybe push the Bulls back to supremecy in the East. Where Rose goes, the Bulls go.
Predicted Record: 55-27

2. WEST – Oklahoma City Thunder
For the first time in years, doubts are circling around the Thunder. Justified or not, the Thunder are going to have to prove that they haven't fell off. Westbrooke is expected to be out till December, which could hurt, but the Thunder still have the second best player in the league, in Kevin Durant, and as long as he is on the court, I expect this team to continue winning a lot of games.
Predicted Record: 56-26

1. EAST – Miami Heat
Three letters made me chose Miami to finish first in the East – LBJ. As long as LeBron is doing his thing in Miami, the Heat are still the team to beat. Many are saying that the Heat will fall off from last year, but I am not so sure. I think they will be better than last year, and once again, D-Wade will prove he is still one of the best players in the league. And if Greg Oden or Michael Beasley give the Heat anything, look out.
Predicted Record: 62-20

1. WEST – San Antonio
New year, same Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs didn't really change there team from last season, and the fact that they were :05 seconds from winning a Championship is probably why. Every season, people expect the Spurs to fall off, but it never happens. Tim Duncan is as good as ever, and with the break out performances of Danny Green and Kawaii Leonard, this team looks destined to win a lot of games.
Predicted Record: 60-22

PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS
Now that we have broke down the seeds, lets get to some playoff predicting:
We'll start with the West this time.
WEST -
#1 San Antonio Spurs versus #8 Dallas Mavericks
Two Texas powerhouses, these teams have a history against one another. A battle of two of the greatest bigs ever, this series would definitely be filled with some great moments, but I would expect the Spurs to push past the Mavericks.
Spurs in 5.

#2 OKC Thunder versus #7 Minnesota Timberwolves
KD versus K-Love. I would love to watch a series between two of the NBA's best. I think when at series end, the Thunder would be victorious, but thats not to say the T-Wolves wouldn't put up a fight.
Thunder in 6.

#3 GS Warriors versus #6 Memphis Grizzlies
Golden State's uptempo spread offense versus Memphis' stingy defense would make for a fun series, but when it comes down to it, all NBA fans are just hoping for another stellar playoff series from Steph Curry. I would say that Golden State would advance.
Warriors in 5.

#4 Houston Rockets versus #5 Los Angeles Clippers
If James Harden and Dwight Howard are meshing come the playoffs, the other teams will need to look out. That being said, neither team has much of a playoff resume. All the stars are ringless, but that shouldn't stop either side from competing. A very tight series, I think it would come down to a play here or a play there.
Clippers in 7.

EAST -
#1 Miami Heat versus #8 Cleveland Cavaliers
A dream come true for NBA owners and ESPN, how great would a series be between LeBron and his old team, and maybe future team. As much fun as ESPN would have building it up, I think LeBron and the Heat would make sure it was a short series.
Heat in 5.

#2 Chicago Bulls versus #7 New York Knicks
Is it possible for the Knicks to fall this far down? If it does happen like this, I don't think the Bulls would be happy about it. Regardless of how the Knicks season goes, they still have Carmelo Anthony, and he is one of the few players in the league who can single handedly take over a game. I would expect the Bulls to win, but it wouldn't be easy.
Bulls in 7.

#3 Brooklyn Nets versus #6 Detroit Pistons
Detroit and Brooklyn went out this offseason and made moves in hopes to be better, and contend. Brooklyn has the experience, but Detroit has the youth, and I think they could do favorably in this series, especially if Greg Monroe is still with them. I would actually predict the Pistons to win the series.
Pistons in 6.

#4 Indiana Pacers versus #5 Washington Wizards
The Pacers might not be the easiest team to watch, but they get the job done. The Wizards should be a fun team to watch this season, but once the playoffs begin, it is a totally different animal. If these two teams play versus one another, expect the Pacers to win.
Pacers in 5.

Round 2 of the Playoffs

WEST -

#1 San Antonio Spurs versus #5 Los Angeles Clippers
Both of these teams have wonderful point guards, and because of that, I could see this series being a real chess match. Both sides have wonderful offenses and world class coaches. In the end though, I think Greg Popevich and the Spurs would show their supremacy and win.
Spurs in 7.

#2 OKC Thunder versus # 3GS Warriors
In the past, Curry could have played Westbrook, but Golden State wouldn't have had someone to shut down Durant. Now though, Golden State has Andre Igudola, a defensive stopper. Because of the addition of Iggy, I think Golden State would win this series.
Warriors in 6.

EAST -

#1 Miami Heat versus #4 Pacers
For any real NBA fan, you want to see this series again. The Heat and Pacers gave us a great one last spring and this season wouldn't be any different. Paul George has only gotten better, and this years Pacers team has Danny Granger. With a better PG and a healthy Granger, this Pacers team could knock off the two time Champions. As long as Lebron James is in a Heat jersey though, I think the Heat win out. He is the Best for a reason.
Heat in 7.

#2 Chicago Bulls versus #6 Detroit Pistons
When this series begins, I think Derrick Rose will be on top of his game, and he will do well versus Detroit. I wouldn't be surprised to see either one of these teams win, but I will take the Bulls, based on their coaching and defense.
Bulls in 7.

Round 3 of the Playoffs

Western Conference Finals -

#1 San Antonio Spurs versus #3 Golden State Warriors
Every season people say that this is the last year for the Spurs, but every year, they seem to prove them wrong. Last season they were seconds away from winning the Finals. This season, I don't think they will have the chance. I think the Spurs have an incredible unit, but Steph Curry and Andre Igudola seemed primed to upset them.
Warriors in 6.

Eastern Conference Finals -

#1 Miami Heat versus #2 Chicago Bulls
If this playoff matchup ends up happening, expect fireworks. These two teams do not like one another, and I don't see that changing. Both teams have very particular styles of play, but when they clash, you can throw that out the window. The series would be a bruiser, and whoever plays better defense or makes the last second shot would end up winning. Once again though, as long as Miami has LeBron, I'm taking the Heat.
Heat in 6.

NBA FINALS

#1 Miami Heat versus #3 Golden State Warriors
If the Heat reach the Finals for a fourth year in a row, they will accomplish something that has not been done since the 1980's, when the Lakers did it. The Heat have Lebron James, the best player in the league, and he definitely gives them an advantage, but Golden State has Steph Curry and now Andre Igudola for defense. I think this series would actually come down to how the second options would play, and because of that, I would take the Heat. As long as D-Wade is your second option, you are in good luck.
Heat in 7.

UPDATE:
With the season underway, I feel like I may have really messed up the seeds. I think Indiana is better than I said, along with the Clippers, and the Wizards don't seem like a team that will finish #5 in the East, if they'll even make the playoffs. But guess what? I'm sticking with my predictions and come the spring, I look forward to looking stupid.

Now on to some bold predictions:

  1. The Philadelphia 76er's will begin the season 3-0.8 Even with the 3-0 start, they'll still finish with the worst record in the NBA.
  2. Chris Paul will have at least one 20 point – 20 assist game this season.
  3. Dwayne Wade will drop 50 points in a game this season.
  4. Steph Curry will break his own record for most three pointers in a season.
  5. Kevin Durant will win the scoring title.
  6. Kevin Love will win comeback player of the year.
  7. At least two coaches will be fired during the regular season.
  8. Kobe Bryant will drop 40 in his first game back.
  9. He wont score 40 points in a single game the rest of the season.
  10. LeBron James will compete in and win the NBA Dunk Contest.
  11. This season will be incredible and unpredictable.

Lastly I want to give out my Season awards:

MVP - Lebron James
Other Candidates:
Kevin Love, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant.

DPOY – LeBron James
Other Candidates:
Dwight Howard, Joakim Noah

Comeback Player of the Year – Kevin Love
Other Candidates:
Danny Granger, Andrew Bynum

Coach of the Year – Doc Rivers
Other Candidates:
Greg Popovich, Jason Kidd

Well that is all I got for now. I might be blogging again about the season if I find the time. Thanks for reading!
God bless!

“He died for me, so I will live for him.”

1UPDATE: After starting 3-1, I am gonna need them to go 11-67. It is possible, right?
2Game 6 of the Finals. Vindicated. “Thank you Ray for leaving. Thank you.” LeBron James
3Imagine a season where both Boston and L.A. Finish at the bottom. It makes me smile, it really does.
4This pains me to place them so low, but I might have been too generous already. I will take solace though if they finish above the Lakers.
5Switched Josh Smith for Milsap – I like Smith better but Milsap was a bargain. We will see how it works out.
6Eighth seed. On purpose? Hmmm...
7Great story, but Rose didn't deserve the MVP. LeBron James should have won his third MVP in a row, which would mean he would have 5 now. It would be five in a row.
8Okay, I cheated. They actually did this already.

Studying Abroad – Month One

Studying Abroad – Month One

Greetings Friends and Family!

I apologize for not blogging since Ireland, but this first month has been so busy and finding time to blog has been difficult. I've only been here for a month, but it feels like much longer than that; I can truly say that Gaming, Austria has become my home away from home. It truly only took a few days till I was settled in, and now I have come to love the study abroad program.
In all honesty, I was not sure how I would feel about being here, only because it is vastly different from America. I like stability and I've come to gain that in Steubenville. Gaming though? I Was not sure. I know everyone says that they love Europe, but I just thought I might get homesick. A month in though, I've come to really enjoy being here, with an understanding that I'll see my friends and family in a few months. I decided that dwelling on being back home will only take away from this experience, and instead, I should just live in the moment.
What has that moment led me to? So many things.
Austria, and Europe in general, are vastly different from the States, but I've come to accept it, and actually it has been growing on me. I've been given so many opportunities here, and I've really been able to grow.
First we can just look at the places I've been able to go. My traveling started with Salzburg, then Vienna, then Split, Croatia, and most recently Cinque Terre, Italy. Besides these trips, I've been able to do all the trips in the Gaming area, with the caves, the waterfall, the Steel Cross, and Book Mountain. Oh, and don't forget good old creek jumping; can't forget about that. My most recent creek jump was at 1:30 A.M. With the water being extremely high. I call that a success.
Anyways...
I want to get across the point that I feel extremely blessed, and that I truly don't take any of these experiences for granted. With that though, I also want to get across the point that though I have been busy, I've always enjoyed the opportunity for things to slow down. Establishing a prayer life over here seems essential, and the University does a wonderful job of giving the students the opportunity to really have time for it. With the noon hour completely free of classes along with anything beyond 5 P.M., it is very easy to spend time with our Lord.
Time has been the most wonderful thing I have had since being here, even though it has flown by. I have been better able to understand who I am along with who I am called to be. The Lord could have helped me and did help me with this all when I was back on campus, but at the same time, it always appeared harder; I probably just made it harder. Now that I am away from multiple distractions, it has been much easier to just listen.
Growth has definitely been the theme, and the thing I've come to put the most emphasis on. It is just too good of an opportunity not to want to change, to be a better version of yourself.
I honestly love Gaming and I am looking forward to my future trips, including Poland, Rome and Assisi, Medjugorie, and Romania Mission Trip over ten-day. Besides that, I will be looking forward to growing even more.
Thank you for reading this little blog. Understand I pray for you, my friends and family, daily. Take Christ to the world and celebrate his love to all.
Hopefully I will blogging again soon.
God Bless!

Ireland 2013

Ireland 2013
08-28-13

I've been on some incredible trips in my life but none can compare to my most recent trip to Ireland. I was traveling with three of my closest friends and to add to that, I was able to spend time with many others. I've decided I'm making a small list of top five events.

  1. Hangout time with the House
Originally when Kolbe, James, CJ and I had decided to all go to Ireland together, it was to be just the four of us. Then Hannah offered us an opportunity to stay at the house she had rented, which already had ten other people. The four of us discussed it and we decided we would stay with them. It turned out to be a wonderful decision, and we were able to share some wonderful times together. “I've had Four,” became a running joke that I assume will last the semester.
  1. The Beach of Galway
When we all arrived in Dublin, we had some bus trouble, which I will discuss later, and with that, we ended up not arriving in Galway till late Tuesday night. On Wednesday, we decided to have a semi-relaxed day, and just hung out at the local beach. It turned out to be an awesome time, and though we didn't swim, we did get to see a lot of good stuff, and even crossed a land bridge that was being taken over by the tide. The memories are unforgettable.
  1. The Cliff's of Moher
Everyone says that when you are in Ireland, it is essential to visit the cliffs. We decided we would do this, and we joined up with a few more Franciscan students for the trip. Though we weren't at the Cliff's too long, it was a beautiful site, and I am very glad we went.
  1. The Aran Islands
I love the great outdoors, and the Aran Islands provided all a man needs in that case. We hiked, we climbed, we rode bikes, and we even laid down on some rocks. The reason this is number two though is not for the outdoor stuff we were able to do, but instead, because of this little church we were told about. It turns out that it is the smallest Church in the world, and was freaking sweet. After the Church, it only got better, as I discovered a beautiful part of the Island that looked untouched. The pictures prove it is a gorgeous spot, but it is even better being there in person.
  1. The Lord providing
This is easily my number one. When we arrived in Ireland, our plane came in an hour late, and we ended up missing our bus. We had to buy new tickets and we got them for 1 p.m. instead of 11 a.m. Which was our original plan. Turns out though, there is no 1 p.m. bus stop at the Airport, at least not to Galway, and so we had to wait till 2:40 p.m. CJ and I, on finding out this news, went to the Church across the road and decided to go pray. We walked in on Mass, and not only that, but the priest, Fr. Brennen, heard confessions afterward, including ours. It was an incredible turn of events, and then the Lord provided again, allowing our old tickets to work for the 2:40 bus. The God moments on this trip were incredible, and all we could do is sing his praises.

There was much more to Ireland, but this is the stuff that I felt like sharing. I hope you enjoyed it, and look for more trip summary's to come. God Bless!

“He died for me, so I will live for Him.”

Expectations for Austria

Expectations – Europe Fall 2013
08-20-13&08-21-13

Greetings my friends!
I hope I find you in the best of spirits. Personally, I am in the best of moods, for as I write this, I am only a few hours from landing in Dublin, Ireland. This is my first of hopefully many blogs to come while I am studying abroad.
When most people think of their semester of studying abroad, they can say that they've been planning on doing this since they got to Franciscan. For me though, I've been planning on doing this since my sister went back in 2005. This is truly a dream come true.
With that though, I don't want to write this blog about my childhood dreams becoming reality, but I instead wanted to focus on expectations and making sure that while we are all abroad, we truly can get the most out of it. I think I'll go with a little list, one that I am truly making as I type. Whelp, here it goes. I can't wait to read this is a few months and see if any of what I type today is true. We shall see.
Expectations – Europe Fall 2013

1. The Lord has a plan
When I think of Europe, or even more specifically, Gaming, I start thinking of all the wonderful stories I've heard over the years, and how much the Lord has been able to do with people. The Lord truly does have a plan, and we just have to be open to it. Not just on certain weekend trips, or certain days, but daily. I think the daily mindset is so very vital. I know I can look at my own life, and some days I am so very good at pursing what the Lord wants, while other days, I truly fail miserably. Luckily for us though, we have a most merciful God, one who forgives us for our many shortcomings. He understands we will fail him time and time again, but he only asks that we get up, and push forward.

2. The semester will be life changing
From everyone I have spoken with, they all seem to come back from their time in Europe a changed man or women, able to say, I am changed person. I hope that I can say the same. I think that I have a lot of room for growth, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to work on that.

3. The semester will be difficult
As much as I am going to enjoy the semester, it seems like the consensus is that it will be difficult as well. For many, it is the first time we'll have a chance to really look at ourselves in a good light. It might happen that we don't like what we see. I am expecting that for all the good times, there will be a fair number of hard ones. Guess what though? That is just life.

4. God is going to be present
This is not so much an expectation but a true statement. The fact is, the Lord is always present in all that we do, but I think that because we have many of our everyday distractions out of the way, he will appear more present than usual. I am looking forward to this very much. Lately my mindset has been to just die to myself, or crucify my will, and I think I will be able to develop this even more while in Austria.

5. God's will brings about the most happiness
This is going to be my last expectation, and just like the last four, it goes hand in hand. When it comes down to it, God has a plan for us, and due to our sinful nature, we don't follow it the way we should. With that though, the Lord does give us a pretty good idea of what he desires from us, and what would bring him the most joy. The beautiful thing is, what brings him the most joy is what should bring us the most joy. If we are seeking his will, and then also doing it, we should find ourselves happier then ever before. I feel like this is quite a tough task to fulfill though while studying abroad. My reasoning is because it seems like the mentality over here is to do as much as you possibly can in four months, and don't ever slow down. I understand that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that going to different countries and whatnot is super exciting and life changing, but it can also be very self centered. It can be very easy to strictly do what is fun, and though in a moral sense the stuff would not be bad, is it really doing God's will to the best of our abilities? I can't answer that question, and you can never fully know, but one way I like to look at it is this. When you make any decision, ask yourself if this is the best way you can love. In 1 John 4:8 we read, “God is Love,” and so we must chose the things that bring us closest to that. The things that require us to love the most sometimes will not seem to be the most fun things, but trust me, they are easily the most worthwhile.

Conclusion:
I am hoping you love your experience in Austria, and I hope I can love mine the same. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we should truly hold dear every last moment. If the Lord is at the center of our hearts, we will bring him great joy and the feeling will be felt on our hearts. Remember to put the kingdom of God first in all things, and allow for the graces that your given to spring forth abundantly. I hope that we can all leave this place better people, and with experiences that we can hold dear forever.

Our Lady, wrap us in your Mantle of protection!
St. Brendan the Navigator and St. Francis Xavier, guide us on our journeys!
God be the Glory!

How I got My License - 1,470 days later

How I got My License
08-13-12

The fact that there is a story behind me getting my license is ridiculous. Most kids around the age of fifteen and a half get their permit, drive for a few months, and shortly after turning sixteen, are  licensed drivers. Key here is, I said "most kids." Sadly, I was not to be like most kids.

When I was sixteen years old, I got my permit, just like most. I might have been a few months behind, but I was still supposed to have it relatively early. But then things didn't go according to plan.
My Dad decided that since Michael drove, I didn't need to myself. He also didn't want to pay for drivers education, so once everything was factored in, I was to wait till I turned 18.
I was upset, but I understood, and I just bummed rides off of everyone. My local friends, if you are reading this, I know your head is moving up and down. Sorry about all those times.
So I found myself turning 18 right before college began. Due to my work schedule though, I had very few days that I was able to renew my permit. I finally found an open day and went and took the test.
I failed....
How someone fails the permit test I do not know, but I got 29 out of 40 questions right... I needed to get 30... The worst part was, the question that got me was about tire measurements. How the heck am I supposed to know tire measurements. I was not about to open that book and read it! No freaking way.
Anyways, I took the test a few weeks later, and this time I passed. I was one step closer to getting my license.
Then something happened... Freshman year.
I got my permit the day before school began, and the first time I drove with that permit was the following summer. Now due to my limited time, I had a few months to develop as a driver, and a very busy schedule that would be getting in the way of my practicing.
I kept driving as much as I could, and I learned the local community college's parking lot pretty well,  but I didn't see the actual road until late July/early August, and even then, I was limited.
The joke that my Dad liked was that I could be the first person to get my license who had never driven on the road. The permit instructor could be giving me the directions and I could tell them, "This is the first time I've done this!" Believe me though, I hated that joke. Driving in a parking lot is fun for a total of five minutes. After that, it just stinks.
Anyways...
My permit expired on August 24, 2012. I was set on getting it before then, and when we finally set up the test, it was to take place on the last day possible, the 24th.
Then life happened...
My Father, a wonderful man, decided that it would not be good for me to get it yet. He asked the unthinkable of me - He asked me to wait until next summer.
At this point, I'm a 19 year old who is about to live off campus for the school year. I was finally going to drive people around and what not, and now, it was not even a possibility.
Sophomore year came and sophomore year went, a licenseless man I was.
Then the summer began, and my goal was to get it before my birthday, which is July 21st.
I got my permit in May, this time with no failings, and by July, I had set up my test. I was to take my test a few weeks before my birthday.
Then my Dad said that the original test date wouldn't work... Then he switched it again...
Then I turned 20...
As you can see, this was a long drawn out four years.
Finally, on July 30th, I took my test and I.....
FAILED!
Well, technically I got my license on that day, but this is when it gets funny/interesting.
I did receive my license, and I am legally allowed to drive, but if we base it off the score my driving instructor gave me, I failed. In Ohio, if you receive a 26 or higher on deductions, you fail your drivers test. He scored me 27... Well, I think he did. It was hard to read, and I couldn't really find an exact total, but I'm pretty sure I got a 27.
So yes, after 1,470 days, I am finally a legal driver, even though, based on his score, I shouldn't be. In my defense though, he took off points for things I didn't even do wrong, but whatever.
So yes, I can drive. Scary, I know. Look out Ohioan's, cause Brendan is coming your way!
But really, I'm a fine driver. Don't fear, I drive the speed limit. And I'm deathly afraid of getting pulled over, mainly because I would die..
Welp, there's that.
I hope my little story produced some laughs. I know the last four years have produced a lot for people.
Thank for reading and God Bless!

Austria Predictions

Austria Predictions
08-12-13

In exactly thirteen days, I will be arriving at the Kartause with all my fellow classmates who have decided to study abroad this fall. There is about 180 of us, and I am most excited for our time there. With that though, I thought it would be fun to try and make a few predictions about our time over there. I'm sure most of them will be wrong, but this is really just for fun. I thank Michael Weber for the inspiration/continual nagging to do this.
Without further ado:

1.  Most likely to have their passport/wallet stolen or lost:
Need I say more?
The first thing I'd like to predict is something that seems to happen with every group that goes over there – someone losing or having their passport stolen. Who do I expect this to happen to? There are many people I could possibly see this happening to, but I think the odds are good that Sarah “DJ Freaky” Bueche does this. I truly hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, I wouldn't be surprised. Chance this happens? 25%

2.  Most likely to befriend strangers:
While in Europe, everyone we meet will be a stranger. It will be very easy to ignore the people around us, or just kind of act like they aren't there, but I know at least one person who wont do this at all. This person will probably be talking to everyone, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out they made some lifetime friends from their train rides or times at restaurants. This person is one of the most outgoing people I know, at least in this way. I truly love this trait about him. I'm talking about Patrick Manion. I'm sure we have all seen him do this at one point or another. He'll talk to anyone. Great trait. Chance this happens? 100%.

3. Most likely to miss their train or bus:
I think this is one that could easily happen to anyone. Traveling is not easy, and if you aren't careful, you can easily miss stuff. When I was thinking about this one though, one person came to mind. This person will tell you they aren't too good with directions, and I feel like they could easily just miss a bus or train cause they got lost. This person is none other than Cj Irvin. Luckily for him, if this does happen, someone will definitely help him out. Can anyone reject Cj? I know I can't. Chance this happens? 33%

4. Most likely to do something illegal:
This face says it all. Look out Austria...
We are gonna be in countries that we have never been to, and with that, we probably wont know all their rules and whatnot. With that, it would be very easy to break the law, intentional or unintentional. Who could I see doing this? Becca Radzinski. Why Becca? Cause she is all about having fun, and you can't let a little law like “no going beyond this point” get in the way of your trip and having maximum fun. Heck, I hope this happens. If it makes for a good story... #NoRegrets Chance this happens? 75%

5. Most likely to spend a night in the hospital:
Just a slip away from injury..
"Expect the unexpected." You never know how things are going to play out, and I feel like injuries are one of those things you can never predict, but in this case, I'll try anyways. If I had to guess someone would end up in the hospital, I would guess J-Rad. Why Joseph? Well the way I see it, J-Rad is just someone who will do a bunch of crazy things, like jump off a building or climb a tree. One of these things could come back to haunt him. We shall see. Chance this happens? 23%

6. Most likely to be everyone's best friend at the Bar:
To get this title, the person has to be super social, super generous, and a drinker as well. I also think this has to be a guy, cause I don't think girl's will be buying drink for guys (Girls, please prove me wrong!) It is also tough, because I don't think our friends are really going to be drinking too much, but I think I have someone who will work. The man who inspired this blog, Mike Weber. If Michael is at a bar, he'll super fun to be with, but also, he might buy a few people drinks... Let's hope. Chance this happens? 48%
At least once, right?

7. Most likely to get searched on a train or plane:
This person has a bit of history. Let's just say a cop or two in Steubenville know his name. Bernardo Gonzalez. Will this happen? Let's hope, because we all love a good Bernardo story. Just imagine him coming in to the room and being like, "Guess what happened to me at the train station?" Followed by the Snaz eye roll. I know I want to hear this story, and right now it is just fictional! Chance this happens? 31%

8. Most likely to spend all there money and need to get more from home:
We are going to be in Europe for almost four months. It will be very easy to go over there and spend a few thousand dollars. The thing is, we all will have a budget and hopefully we can stay within that amount of money. Sometimes though, you spend more then you expected. This is not an easy one to predict, as I had to think about it, but I went with Tim McNamera. This is a long shot, but only because it is hard to gauge how someone will be with there money. Chance this happens? 5%

9. Most likely to find treasure in Europe:
Yes, I am just throwing this in for you two. I know two men who plan on spending extensive time discussing and maybe even finding buried treasure. The fact that the treasure they probably look to find has been lost for years doesn't mean they wont do it. When Tim Penney and James Sweeney are together, anything is possible... Chance this happens? 99% I like their chances.

10. Most likely to fall in love, marry someone in Europe and not come back with us to the States:
I decided for the last one, I would pick both a girl and a guy.

She already is getting to know Ben and Jerry, why not Vladimir?
When it comes to women, I thought this one was an easy one. This girl just wants to do what the Lord's will is, and that means she could end up Marrying Vladimir from that nice bar in that far off country. They will meet, and he'll be instantly charmed by her eyes and caught off guard by her voice, but before long, they'll be in love. Dominique Peters, we will definitely miss you. Enjoy life in Europe! Chance this happens? 50% It's really a coin toss.

Maybe Rick can come too?
Now we look at guys. This one is difficult as well, but after a little thought, I decided I could see Dan Hass getting married over there. Dan already hates the way Obama is doing things, so if he can move away and start an family over in Europe why not? He'd have to find a good Catholic country, so I'm thinking Vatican City might be best. I heard whoever is in charge over there is Catholic, but I could be wrong. Who knows? Chance this happens? 20%

Well I want to say thank you for anyone who read this. This upcoming semester is going to be unbelievable and I'm just glad I get to share it will all of you!
